In his foreword to this book Edmund Hillary said of the author that his "contribution to mountaineering in New Zealand had been long and valuable" adding that John Pascoe was also a profound scholar of the early history of New Zealand mountain exploration. Here, in 19 chapters he sets out the stories of memorable and notable first ascents of peaks in the North Island and of many more in the South Island where the upper regions are dominated by the Southern Alps. Many of the famous names in NZ mountain climbing, of early explorers of the high country, are menbtioned therein and the most famous of them all, Sir Edmund Hillary, provided the foreword.
