This volume is the first in a two part series, "Historic Buildings of New Zealand', published in conjunction with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. It concentrates on the buildings of the North Island, using them to illustrate and tie together many aspects of New Zealand's history. The buildings featured range from richly decorated Maori meeting houses to the modest homes of settlers and missionaries, from early industrial and commercial buildings to the farm buildings and mansions of successful sheep farmers, from the Gothic proportions and elegance of a pro-cathedral to the unpretentious dignity of Maori churches in Northland.
