Hardback in good condition. Grey/brown cloth boards with bevelled edges, gilt design & titles to front cover and spine. Rubbing, chipping and bumping to extremities, bottom corners are worn, splitting to paper at internal hinges but binding firm, small abrasion inside front board, no inscriptions, pages are tanned with scattered foxing throughout, mainly to first and last few pages and edges, closed edges are rough.

"The War in the North" was originally issued separately. "Old New Zealand" was first published at London in 1863. Frederick Edward Maning (5 July 1812 25 July 1883) was an early settler in New Zealand, a writer, and a judge of the Native Land Court. He published two books under the pseudonym of "a Pakeha Maori." Maning arrived in the Hokianga area at age 22, on 30 June 1833, and lived among the Ngapuhi Maori. He took a Maori wife, Moengaroa, of Te Hikutu hapu; of Ngapuhi, and they had four children.
