While these pioneering dams were not large by world standards, they were built in their thousands by bush men, miners and engineers and, taken collectively, contributed significantly to the economy of the country at that time and into this century. The story is told in terms of the social, economic and administrative environments of the time and places in a world and national perspective the early progression of New Zealand dam building technology.
