Westcoast kiwi worked on Death Railway. "I knew that the story of John's life, particularly the years spent as a prisoner of war in Singapore and Thailand, should be written. We finally produced an initial manuscript which was greatly improved by Win Beasley, the author of many other local histories. Yet John's life was much more than his war experiences. His career as a lawyer had already been chronicled in an oral interview deposited in the archive of the Alexander Turnbull Library. We decided to expand the project further and asked Michael Kelly to be the contracted biographer. Michael had already completed a follow-up history of the golf club from 1995 to 2010 and so was well known to us. The writing however was complicated by John's death on July 7, 2010. Michael and I missed John's incredible recall of events, many of them from years ago. Rupert, Hamish and Nigel contributed as much as they could.
