BILL BLACK: I DID IT MY WAY is the story of Bill Black, who grew up in South Otago with a passion for flying. Told in his own indomitable style Bill recounts learning to fly Tiger Moths, gaining his Commercial Pilot's Licence, and his first aviation position with Richie Air Services in Te Anau where he flew Cessna 180s, de Havilland Dominies, Grumman Widgeon and Cessna 206 floatplanes. But after being given a ride in the first helicopter to visit the area he realised this was the side of aviation that appealed to him. Tim Wallis, the pioneer of deer recovery, offered Bill a position. Over 22 years later and 25,000 hours of flying, Bill was involved in over 500 search and rescue missions, including over 300 mercy missions, and was awarded numerous awards, the greatest being the MBE. Now in retirement in Te Anau, Bill's reminiscences in this book relect a period in New Zealand aviation, the likes of which will never be seen again. Edited and compiled by Merv Halliday with a Foreword by Sir Tim Wallis.
