The author was sent by the New Zealand Government to meet with the Maoris when they were opening up their lands for the white people. "As a friendly Maori once said to me, 'If a White man enters a Maori whare, he is made welcome and given food to eat, but if a Maori dares to enter a white man's house, he is thrown out as if he were a dog.' Therein lies the crux of the whole thing. The two races can never assimilate, and the Maoris, knowing it to be a fact, wished only to be left to themselves.
