"Joseph Matthews hears Missionaries at home on furlough at age 20 and ‘felt the call’.
In 1829 he offered his services to the CMS – Church Missionary Society, as missionary to the N.Z. natives (Maori). Owing to the reports of their fierce nature and cannibal propensities this field was represented as being the most difficult and dangerous at that time. *Note: In 1787 it was proposed in the House of Commons, that N.Z. was an eligible field for convicts, but the cannibal propensities of the aborigine’s (Maori) overpowered
every argument in favour of the scheme."
