Flat bottom, shallow draft, sailing scows were vital to NZ's transport system from the latter 1800s to well into the 1900s. Eaddy, who sailed in many of these craft made a fine contribution to NZ maritime history when his book was first published in 1939, when many scows were still in service, now mostly with motors also. He tells the tale of these ships well, having been there, done that.
