The two became early settlers in Canterbury, establishing the Deans dynasty which still retains strong connections with the province. The book is based on the letters of the brothers and they graphically depict the problems facing early arrivals, particularly regarding land tenure. Both brothers died early, William in a shipwreck in 1851 and John in 1854, after becoming ill on a return voyage from Scotland, where he had married. Later, in turn, his son, also John, carried on the family farming enterprises the brothers had instigated and was consolidated by his widowed mother, to firmly establish one of Canterbury's notable founding families.
