Publisher: A. H. and A. W. Reed, 1940. Pasted inside the front cover is a telegram informing Bates of the death of Lady Maclean in 1940, just 5 months after she signed the book.

The book is deidicated to Lady Maclean and she assisted in the publication of the book. She was the daughter-in-law of Sir Donald Maclean (Mclean), and wife of Sir Robert Donald Douglas Maclean (1852-1929). Bookplate adhered inside front board. Very good hardback with good jacket. Boards are rubbed at edges with a little compression and bumping. Minor foxing, mainly to endpapers. Jacket is rubbed, marked and chipped with two closed tears. Sir Donald McLean KCMG (27 October 1820 5 January 1877) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician and government official. He was involved in negotiations between the settler government and Maori from 1844 to 1861, eventually as Native Secretary and Land Purchase commissioner. He was one of the most influential figures in Maori-Pakeha; relations in the mid-1800s and was involved in the dispute over the "Waitara Purchase", which led up to the First Taranaki War. 157 pages with photos.
