What was a shepherd’s life like, fifty years ago? There are not many who can answer that question from their own personal experience, but Ben Coutts is one of them. He began as a schoolboy helping out with the sheep on a farm in Perthshire, and went on to herd at the head of the Ettrick valley. After the war he factored three hill estates. Along the way, he experienced all the ups and downs of a shepherd’s year-the shearing and the dipping, the 16-hour days of the lambing season, the search for sheep in deep snowdrifts, the convival gatherings in remote bothies. All this is recalled in Coutts’ inimitable style, in a book full of colourful anecdotes and unusual characters.
