Dunn was a pioneer in South African geology, having given the first description of the Pretoria Series under the name of Lydenburg Beds, and the name of Dwyka to the famous glacial conglomerate. His knowledge of the geology of these countries, especially in regard to the occurrence of gold, is perhaps unique.
