Gerhard Mueller was a young surveyor who mapped the rugged West Coast of New Zealand during the height of the 1865–1866 gold rushes. While working in the field, he wrote a series of highly detailed letters to his wife, Elizabeth (affectionately nicknamed "Bannie"), who remained behind in Invercargill.
