Edith Howes (1872-1954) was a New Zealand teacher and writer. Born in England, her family emigrated to New Zealand when she was a child. Her education led her to become an elementary school teacher. During her tenure, she noted that the teaching environment was held in small poorly ventilated rooms where teachers relied on rote methods and applications of corporal punishment. She instigated reforms which led to better school buildings, smaller class sizes and experiential learning. She also noted the lack of good books for teaching young children so she began to write some of her own. In all, she wrote 30 books for children, some of which ran into multiple printings. After retiring from teaching in 1919 she continued to write including some adult fiction
