This book . follows on from a previous publication, "The restless mountain", which has been out of print for several years. It has been published only because of constant requests received for copies of "The restless mountain". It is on the same lines, and incorporates a few of the articles printed there, notably historical gems such as that describing Dr Dieffenbach's climbs in 1839, "The first lady's ascent", and "A parson's tramp". It is generally the story of historically interesting events that have occurred on Mount Taranaki over a very long period. The mountain is not restricted by the artificially defined area of the Egmont National Park . but by the natural area, extending up to 40 kilometres from the summit .
