Terry Kearins a Kairanga farmer, who was born in Dannevirke in 1921 and farmed near Woodville until joining the Air Force in 1941. Initially based in Paraparaumu, he trained at Woodburne and Ohakea before sailing to England in 1942. He joined the 485 Fighter Squadron a New Zealand squadron attached to the Royal Air Force at the beginning of 1943 where he started doing formation, aerobatics and air combat training. During an operation over Northern France on July 15, 1943, he and Cheketts were shot down by German fighter planes.
