Powell wrote Memories and History of the Golden Valley in 2008, chronicling the history of the valley where generations of his family had farmed, from his great-great-grandparents to his son. The inspiration for the book began with the stories his mother told him. It took him about six years to complete. "It was a very big involvement of the brain," he said. "It's got the history of the pioneering days." Powell and his wife Frances moved from Fabians Valley, in the Onamalutu, to Renwick around 2003. Before moving to Renwick he was on the farm every day of his life, Powell said. He became involved in Outward Bound as the three-day tramp ended on his property. "They'd walk from Pelorus and end up at our place," he said. Powell and his wife provided about "1000 cups of tea a year" to trampers, he said. If they did not arrive on time he would go and look for them on his tractor. Lost trampers used to "shoot out of the brush" when they heard the vehicle, he said. He stored food in a hut for the trampers in case of emergencies. Brian Powell QSM, JP passed away 2016. 305 pages, illustrated.
