This work comprises the life history of eight Maori women. They have all been brought up in small rural communities - communities associated with the Riangatu faith, a distinct Maori religious movement founded in the late-19th century by the visionary leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki. It is the women in Maori society who usually transmit the family history and its values to the children, and the inner strength of the family thus derives from the women.
