Entertaining and informative, this book describes early farming and family life at Hawke's Bay's Te Mata, Waimarama and Tukituki Stations, as well as outlining the early history of Havelock North. Allan 'Tuki' McLean and his wife Hannah Chambers built Duart, a grand mansion on the Havelock hills, in 1882, and established the 300-acre Duart Estate. For twenty years a leading thoroughbred and racehorse breeder, McLean has been largely ignored in previous histories - the reasons are explored here. The previously untold and sometimes tragic lives of their ten children are recounted here for the first time. The building of Duart House is also described in detail.
