Deep Jay: Kiwis at War in Vietnam is a 1995 novel. It follows a platoon of New Zealand soldiers dealing with the harsh and gritty realities of the Vietnam War, balancing daily survival against unseen enemies, mortar fire, and the psychological strain of jungle combat.

Rod Eder served as a private soldier with the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR). He deployed to Vietnam in 1968 as part of the Victor 3 (V3) Company. His deployment followed intensive pre-deployment combat training at the 1RNZIR base in Malaysia in late 1967.
Eder passed away in June 2008 at the age of 62 from cancer linked to Agent Orange exposure during his wartime service.
