This is believed to be the NZ war veteran Major Neill Rattray MBE, born in Dunedin and later a resident of Waimate, Canterbury. In May 1941, he was captured in Greece by German forces. He left the prisoner of war camp and reached England in April 1945, and was back in New Zealand by the following July.

The authors of this book made between them no less than eight remarkable attempts at escape from German prisoner-of-war camps. The courage, ingenuity and resourcefulness revealed in this book are in every way amazing, and the adventures involved in the escapes are so vividly and intimately described that the reader is kept in a perpetual state of excitement and suspense.
