In his 1989 autobiography, From Tin Shed to Knighthood, he recognised the dramatic changes that have taken place in manufacturing. He held top national posts in manufacturers' and business organisations. He was a city councillor (1969-72) and a keen supporter of the arts and motor racing . Married twice and had five children. His second wife, Lady (Adrienne) Stewart was one of the country s first women to be a public company director.
