On 5th August 1944, more than 900 Japanese prisoners-of-war made a suicidal attempt to break out of their prison camp at Cowra. Of the 1,104 Japanese in the camp, 234 were killed and 108 wounded. A similar incident at Featherstone Camp, Wellington, New Zealand left 48 dead and 63 wounded. In each case it appeared they would rather seek death than freedom. Why was this so?
