Very good hardbacks with jackets. Both books are bound in original maroon cloth, titles lettered in gilt on spines, inscription to ffeps, some rubbing to edges, fading to base of spines, mark to edges on end-papers, binding frim, minor marks. Jackets are rubbed at edges, minor marks, fading to spine. Volume I has a little bumping to spine ends. Volume II has small crease to corner of first 3 pages, a few more pages have a deep crease to bottom corner.

The work is notable for its wealth of illustrations, mainly by Sydney Parkinson, who went on the voyage as Banks's botanical draughtsman. Eighteen of his remarkably beautiful botanical and zoological drawings are reproduced for the first time in full colour, and there are in addition eighty plates in monochrome collotype, topographical, botanical, zoological, and ethnographical. The introduction is given a separate series of portraits and there are also a number of sketch maps. The great majority of these illustrations have not before been published.
