Casualties have occurred in a restructuring New Zealand meat industry, but if Ocean Beach were to close down it would simply be because of continued bloody battles between the plant management and the Ocean Beach sub-branch of the New Zealand Meat Workers Union. The affairs of the Ocean Beach union increasingly came into the open in 1984 through an inquiry into an election and irregularities in the handling of a $250,000 strike fund. An investigation of that scandal by Michael Turner, of the Southland Times, produced evidence of industrial mismanagement, sabotage and bribery as well as the cynical manipulation of the workforce.
