The biography of one of the early, great mountaineers and alpine guide in the New Zealand Alps. Peter Graham was one of NZ's earliest mountaineering guides and certainly became among its most notable, making a tremendous contribution to the development of NZ mountaineering from the early 1890s, when the sport was becoming established. He was head guide at the Hermitage, the base for many climbs to the highest peaks in the Southern Alps, including Mount Cook, from 1894 to 1928. He was a popular guide and companion for many climbers including Freda du Faur. Born in Westland, on the Tasman Sea side of the Alps, in 1874. He died there in 1961. At the time he was compiling this autobiography, but his story had advanced only to 1910. John Pascoe, another noted man of the mountains, wrote both the foreward and epilogue rounding out the story and the original manuscript was edited by H B Hewitt. A fine account of early mountaineering in NZ. He and brother Alex guided for 30 years or more.
