John Stenton Workman as he is known in the 21st century to his many descendants was born Stainton Workman January 18th 1818 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was part of the first group of European emigrants established and employed as sealers, whalers and traders who had begun living in New Zealand at the turn of the 19th century. There is a scarcity of their records among the surviving historical documentation of the time. This is his story, how he was given a Maori wife by Te Rauparaha, was boatman for Sir Frederick Weld moving with him to Flaxbourne then settling in Kaikoura with his family. He died in 1904 at Petone.
