The Brigade tells the untold story of the men and women of the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade who found themselves at the very centre of the disaster. The book has been compiled by brigade member Alastair Suren who has brought together the stories and recollections of individual brigade members, as they recount their experiences of that day and the days that followed. Each story is unique, as brigade members recall where they were when the earthquake struck, how they responded to the unfolding crisis and how they balanced the needs of the community they serve with the needs of their own families. Together these stories build a picture of one community's response to a disaster while at the same time giving us an insight into what it means to be part of a New Zealand volunteer fire brigade". 207 pages, illustrated.
