This book tells the story of a young Maori boy who was caught up in the Taranaki hostilities of the 1860s, and adopted by William Fox, a Pakeha politician. In later life he was a law clerk and interpreter. The boy's story is set in the wider contest of the wars of the 1860's and 70's and the complex Maori land issues of Taranaki. The events of 1881 in Parihaka are given special attention.
