Green cloth boards are rubbed, bumped and chipped at edges with some tears and small loss to cloth on the spine. Gilt titles to spine are dulled down. The date 1910 in gilt is at base of spine. No inscriptions. Pages have rough cut edges and are tanned and foxed. Foldout map to front of book is complete and withour tears. 171 pages with b&w plates.
In 1837, George Hempelman arrived from Sydney, Australia to set up a whaling station out of Peraki Bay, near Christchurch, New Zealand. He kept a log documenting the daily life and existence of the men and boats based there, which has been published in this volume. Contents includes: "Remarks on Board the Brig 'Bee' on a Whaling Voyage" (1835-1836); "Remarkes in New Zeland, March 1837. Table of Whales Caught. Illustrations include Piraki Valley. Looking down to cover and the site of the old whaling station.
