About the Author Alister MacKenzie was born in England. He practiced medicine and served as a civil surgeon in the Boer War, beginning his career in golf--course design shortly after returning home. He died in 1934.
This is the lost manuscript of Alister MacKenzie, one of the great legends of the game of golf. Originally written in 1934, the book has never been published until now. MacKenzie was the author of the classic "Golf Architecture", published in 1920, and the designer of famous golf courses in the UK, Australia and the USA, notably Augusta National, the home of the Masters Tournament. In "The Spirit of St Andrews", MacKenzie shares his thoughts on great golf courses, technology and equipment, course design, speed of play, the golf swing and putting. He gives lessons on how to play, why you play and where you play. The book is full of anecdotes of his contemporaries, such as Hagen, Sarazen, Jones and others.
