Based on extensive research utilising both New Zealand and overseas resources, this publication places on record the history of New Zealand s first hundred years of dam building as it concerns the extraction of kauri logs, mining of gold, and the supply of water to towns and cities. While these pioneering dams were not large by world standards, they were built in their thousands by bush men, miners and engineers and, taken collectively, contributed significantly to the economy of the country at that time and into this century. The story is told in terms of the social, economic and administrative environments of the time and places in a world and national perspective the early progression of New Zealand dam building technology.
