On the Natural History and Classification of Birds is a seminal two-volume work by the English zoologist and ornithologist William Swainson,. The book covers the general natural history of birds, including their anatomy, adaptations for flight, and the formation of nests. It also delves into the principles of ornithological bibliography, nomenclature, and methods for collecting and preserving specimens. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to Swainson's classification of birds into various orders, tribes, and families, which he approached from an ardent, albeit now outmoded, belief in the 'quinary' system of classification, emphasizing analogies and patterns in nature. Several bird species are still named after Swainson, attesting to his significant contributions to ornithology, even if some of his own species classifications have since been revised.
