Author's Service: Roy Whitecross served as an Australian private in the 8th Division AIF after enlisting in 1941. He was captured following the fall of Singapore.
Camp Imprisonment: He was held in notorious locations including Changi, camps in Malaya, Burma, and Thailand.The Burma-Thailand Railway: Whitecross survived forced labor on the infamous railway, where extreme deprivation, starvation, disease, and brutality caused a fifty percent death rate among the workers.
Labour in Japan: Later in the war, he was transported to mainland Japan to perform slave labour in an underground coal mine.
Secret Diary: He risked his life to secretly maintain a diary on scraps of paper, which was buried and later recovered after the war ended.
