To many people the Kaipara, which encompasses New Zealand's largest harbour and an extensive hinterland interwoven with a network of waterways, is unknown territory, as is its early history. This book examines five selected aspects of the history of the area between 1250 and 1875; and provides an insight into some of the principal figures whose influence and deeds shaped the Kaipara's future. It begins with an account of the conquest and occupation of the Kaipara, including pivotal battles of Moremonui and Ika-a-Ranganui. It then explores the recorded response of early travellers through the region; the extablishment of the Wesleyan and Roman Catholic missions; the harbour's European history; and concludes with an account of the acquisition and early settlement of the hinterland by bona fide settlers and the Crown.
