This sequal to the author's successful, entertaining and informative "Beyond the Skippers Road" enfolds the community and characters of this rugged and isolated spot in the wilds beyond Queenstown. With its difficult access, isolation and extremes of weather, life in the area is not for everyone and over the years it has seen the boom years of the gold rush of the 1860s, with about 3000 working and living in the area before a disastrous flood on the Shotover in the late 1870s. When the author went to the Skippers in 1941 as a young bride many of the earlier settlers ,miners, shepherds and farmers remained there and it is around their stories that this absorbing insight into the lives of these men and women, as rugged as the country around them, is told, preserving memories and experiences of a bygone age. First published in 1967
