Maori Girl. 1960. First Edition. By HILLIARD, Noel

HILLIARD, Noel. Maori Girl.

London: William Heinemann Ltd, 1960. True First Edition / First Printing.
Hardcover (with dust jacket).

The historically significant, award-winning debut novel by New Zealand journalist and writer Noel Hilliard. Following protagonist Netta Samuel as she migrates from rural Taranaki to the post-war urban landscape of Wellington, this ground-breaking work served as the seminal entry of Hilliard's acclaimed tetralogy. Sparking widespread literary dialogue upon its release for its raw, objective depiction of contemporary racial and social discrimination, it remains a landmark milestone of 20th-century New Zealand fiction.

• Binding & Cloth: Original publisher's blue cloth boards. Displays a distinct spine lean alongside heavy rubbing, bumping, and creasing to the extremities. Features noticeable, heavily faded patches across the cloth surfaces. Core structural binding remains completely intact.
• Interior: 263 pages. Leaves show occasional handling wear and scattered creasing to the page corners. Features a previous owner's name written directly to the front free endpaper (ffep).
• Edges: Closed outer text block edges show light, age-appropriate foxing and toning.
• Dust Jacket: Original pictorial jacket is intact but in tatty, heavily worn condition. Displays heavy rubbing, overall surface marking, fading, and extensive chipping with minor loss to the spine ends. Main front panel features a large, deep closed tear.
• Overall: A complete, Fair to Good (G) collector's copy of a highly elusive and widely celebrated classic of modern Kiwi social realism.
