This controversial examination of the "discovery and origin traditions of the Maori" questions the established traditions and folklore that the arrival and settlement by a Great Fleet of canoes, in the 1300s, led to the foundation of the Maori race in New Zealand. Coming at a time when this concept was already under academic challenge, this important addition to the literature introduced a new level of depth and investigation to the subject. As a result, Simmons work is a hefty volume of seven parts, eight appendices, bibliography, genealogical and names index plus general index. A classic New Zealand history book which disproved the myth of the Great Fleet that supposedly settled New Zealand in ca. 1350.
