Matches the criteria for a first edition as stated in Bagnall T705. (second edition states 1926 and is a different size to the first edition). 

Very good hardback in blue cloth with gilt titles and design. 
Inscription inside front cover states: "Presentation Copy Hon J A Hanan". = Josiah Alfred Hanan (1868–1954). NZ Barrister, politician, educationist.
Inscription could be written by author or J A Hanan.

Binding firm, boards are rubbed, bumped and marked, some creasing to spine, and bubbling to cloth on rear board, corners and spine ends are frayed, end-papers are heavily foxed, scattered light foxing throughout. 
All 16 b&w plates are present and in good condition. 592 pages.
