A history of the Palmerston North Police District

A comprehensive history of police service in Palmerston North Police District. Although written as one of a series of district histories to celebrate the centenary of the New Zealand Police (1886-1986), the book covers a wider time-span than 100 years and commences with a brief account of the armed constabulary services associated with early European settlement along the lower reaches of the Rangitikei, Manawatu, Otaki and Waikanae rivers (1840s to 1860s). Later chapters describe the systematic development of a network of police stations during the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s, when European settlement spread inland to the heavily forested areas of Levin, Shannon, Palmerston North, Feilding, Woodville, Pahiatua, Eketahuna and Pongaroa. These stations were originally controlled by district commanders in Wanganui and Wellington, but in 1918 they became part of the new police district of Palmerston North, which has remained in existence to the present day. This book contains the names of 1500 men and women who have policed the district during the past 140 years and provides many fascinating glimpses in the complexities of human behaviour. It is a valuable contribution to the history of Palmerston North and the surrounding district
