The book provides a firsthand account of his experiences on submarines in the North Sea, Atlantic, and Mediterranean, including the tension of long patrols and the danger of attacking enemy vessels. It offers a unique perspective from a lower-deck perspective, detailing the realities of life below the sea and the loss of shipmates who were eventually marked "discharged dead".
