On the 3rd of February 1931, at approximately 10.47am, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck Hawke's Bay. A total of 256 lives were lost, and hundreds injured. In Hastings, 93 of those lives were lost, most of them in the central business district. By comparison to other world natural disasters, this total is small. But in terms of shaping and defining Hastings - the impact was very large. Every life lost was a tragedy.
