The 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, a devastating event that struck Napier and Hastings, resulted in widespread destruction, loss of life, and a dramatic reshaping of the landscape, including the draining of Ahuriri Lagoon and the subsequent reconstruction of Napier in an Art Deco style. Before the Earthquake: Napier and Hastings: Were thriving towns with a mix of residential and commercial buildings, including the central business districts. Ahuriri Lagoon: Was a large, popular wetland area, important for fishing and recreation. Landscape: The coastal areas around Napier and Hastings were relatively flat, with the sea level relatively stable. After the Earthquake: Destruction: The earthquake caused widespread damage, with buildings in the central areas of Napier and Hastings being leveled, and fires further destroyed the remaining structures. Casualties: The earthquake resulted in a significant loss of life, with the total death toll reaching 256. Land Uplift: The earthquake caused significant land uplift, with coastal areas around Napier being raised by around two meters. Ahuriri Lagoon Drained: The uplift resulted in the draining of Ahuriri Lagoon, transforming it into dry land.
