Charles Haylock and his family arrived in Akaroa unintentionally in 1850 when a mishap interrupted their voyage from England. Three years later Charles opened his flour mill in Grehan Valley, which served wheat growers on Banks Peninsula and the Canterbury Plains for almost a decade. When competition from Christchurch mills caused it to close, the mill took on a new and longer life, first as a brewery, then as a jam factory. Nothing remains of the buildings and we can picture them only from a few contemporary paintings. However, the lovingly restored Haylock family home, regarded as the best preserved English pioneer cottage in Akaroa, is a fitting testimony to the enterprise and energy of a remarkable pioneering Canterbury family"--Back cover.
