For Hulme, these are three places in her native New Zealand: Okarito, a former goldrush settlement on the West Coast; Moeraki, site of ancient habitations; and Stewart Island on the southernmost tip. Keri Hulme is also the author of "Bone People", which won the Booker Prize in 1985, and "The Windeater".
