The only man living to have won the Victoria Cross twice, Charles Upham has become a legend in his own time. He won his first V.C. in the defence of Crete, when he destroyed enemy machine-gun posts single-handed. He was wounded and captured by the Germans in North Africa after leading a frontal assault on enemy guns which - he learned after the war - won him his second V.C. He spent the rest of the war in P.O.W. camps, including colditz, where he was transferred after numerous attempts to escape from other camps. Any war biography is bound to create the impression that every battle was fought by one man or unit. Charles Upham hopes that this book may be read, not as a tribute to him, but to all those others with whom he served.
