She was revered for her compassionate work among Maori, the poor, homeless and sick, which brought her into conflict with Roman Catholic authorities. Born in France in 1835 and against her parents' wishes, ran away to New Zealand at the age of twenty-five. She landed in Auckland in 1860 to begin over sixty years of dedicated service to the poor and afflicted of all races, of all creeds, in her adopted country.
