This book belonged to Dr. Guy Hardy Scholefield OBE, 1877 1963. (The compiler of the 1940 version of the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.) There is a Macmillan-Brown prize book plate adhered inside the front board, awarded to Guy Scholefield 1904.

Hardback with no jacket. Purple cloth boards are well worn at edges with marks, fading and bubbling to cloth. The spine is dulled down, chipped and the cloth is split along the right edge (binding is firm). A triangle piece is missing fron top left corner of spine (The Mar is missing from title). The pages have rough cut edges and some light foxing otherwise very good. Frontispiece with complete tissue guard. 478 pages plus publisher's ads. b/w photos. The colourful past of the province meticulously researched and told with many interesting anecdotes. An interesting and informative history of the pioneer past.
