Properties, Pulpits and Painters recounts the author's great-grandfather Andrew Paterson in the mid-1800s, driving sheep from Nelson to the Mackenzie Country via Tophouse and Waihopai Valley, into the uninhabited Molesworth country and on to Canterbury. Documents preserved in "black tin boxes" kept by early settlers had been invaluable and Dick is grateful for the "prolific letter-writing" habits of previous generations".
